KENYA

Kenya Safari

The dry seasons in Kenya are from January to late March and again from June to late September. The hottest months are February and March. The coldest period is between July and August.

You can go on safari all year round. However, the chances of seeing animals are greatest as the dry season progresses. Then the animals come to the remaining water holes.

The country experiences two rainy seasons per year: The long rains from April to June and the shorter green season from October to December. Then you will experience short and heavy rainfalls, often in the afternoon and the evenings.

Masai Mara KEnya is year around a mecca for wildlife watching.

Here you can find specific information on the Great Wildebeest migration in Masai Mara.

Kenya Beach

The climate at the Kenyan coast tends to be similar to the climate inland. That said, the best months to visit the beaches at the clear Indian Ocean are January and February and the months between July and October. It is the dry season then and you can enjoy clear water and sunny days. Do not forget to bring a good sun protection!

By the way: In Kenya you can also find the Marine Big 5: Billfish, Dolphin, Sea Turtle, Whale and the Whale Shark.

Humpback-Whales are migrating along Kenya's coast between August and October. Whale Sharks can be seen from late December til Mid-March. Then, they are migrating to Zanzibar.

There are five species of Sea Turtles in Kenya. They can be seen year around. The nesting season is between May and October. You can visit a Turtle Watching Station in Watamu.

TANZANIA

Tanzania Safari

Tanzania enjoys a pleasant tropical climate throughout the year. The best time for safaris in Tanzania are the two dry seasons: mid-December to late March and June to late October. At the beginning of the dry season, the parks are often bathed in lush green. At the end of the dry season there is the best chance of seeing the animals at the remaining waterholes.

There are two rainy seasons in northern Tanzania. The long rainy season lasts from around the end of March to the end of May. During this time there are often persistent and heavy downpours. The small rainy season lasts from November to mid-December. Then it usually rains briefly and heavily in the morning and late afternoon. Incidentally, in the southwest/west of Tanzania there is only one rainy season, which runs from around December to April.

The Serengeti in Tanzania is a year-round playground for East African wildlife.

During the great migration, huge herds of wildebeest can be seen.

One of the "Seven Wonders of the Natural World"
The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara - Serengeti Ecosystem

In search of always green grass and fresh water, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate through the vast Serengeti/Maasai Mara ecosystem in an annual rhythm. Followed of course by some big cats. The process is the same every year. However, the animals adapt precisely to the rain.

After the small rainy season, in December the herds arrive on the wide steppes of the Serengeti in the south. In February the wildebeest calves are born. From April, the animals begin their migration northwards. Around June, the animals have reached the Grumeti River and then migrate further north until around July/August. Around September most of the animals reach the Maasai Mara and cross the Mara River. This crossing can be really spectacular, but the days are very difficult to predict. In October the herds make their way south again. And then the whole spectacle starts all over again.

The great migration cycle

Zanzibar Beach

The recommendations for your travel to Zanzibar are very similar to those on the mainland. For sunny and unwinding experiences on the tropical island, we recommend to stick to the dry season. The short dry season runs from January to mid-March. The so-called long dry season is from June to October.

NAMIBIA

Since Namibia lies below the equator, the seasons are exactly the opposite of those in Europe. The country in general has a subtropical desert climate, which is caracterized by a huge difference in day- and night-temperatures.

Winter is the dry season and lasts between May and September. In winter the days are still very warm and temperatures can reach 25°C. But be aware that nights can get cold and temperatures can even drop below freezing.

Summer corresponds to the rainy season and is between October and April. Rain and thunderstorms are common in the months between January and April. These are the months when Namibians celebrate, because Namibia is generally a very dry country.

The warmest month in Namibia: January/February - the day temperatures climb up to 35°C and can have peaks of over 40°C in the desert areas.

The coldest month in Namibia: June/July - day temperatures still go up to 22°C, nights are normally around 7°C. But temperatures can also drop below freezing.

The wettest month in Namibia: February, with an average rainfall of 65 mm.

The most popular time to travel to Namibia is from mid-June to the end of October. Temperatures are very pleasant during the day and you will probably be accompanied by clear blue skies for the entire trip. It is also perfect for safaris, because now the animals are gathering at the remaining waterholes towards the end. But be careful: the accommodations are booked well in advance.

The months of April and May are also a great time to travel. Then the rainy season is already over, but nature still feeds on the water and there are greener landscapes. On our travels, we have seen many animals in the parks, even at this time of year. And the nice thing is that not many travelers choose this time of year.

BOTSWANA

The basic characteristics of the climate in Botswana are the same as in Namibia. Winter brings clear, blue skies and still warm daytime temperatures. The nights, on the other hand, can be very cold. The coldest month of the year in Botswana is July, with an average low of 5°C and high of 22°C.

Summer is very hot and humid and there are frequent, short and heavy rains that can be very local. January is the warmest month, with an average high of 32°C and low of 20°C.

Did you know: Not only the currency in Botswana is called Pula. Pula is also the Setswana word for rain and is used as a toast as we say "Cheers". This is probably because rain is a very valuable and rare resource in Botswana and is greatly appreciated by all.

The best months to visit Botswana are between April and October. The later in this period you travel, the better it is for game viewing. The weather is drier and the landscape and the grass is lower.

ZIMBABWE

Victoria Falls

The best time to see the Victoria Falls is in the months right after the rainy season, between February and May. Then the falls swell into fabulous, dramatic waterfalls.

The low season is between July/August and December. The waterfalls are then much smaller and not nearly as impressive. But now it is time to visit the Devil's Pool, the ultimate infinite pool. Or for white water rafting on the Zambezi River.

JORDAN

The weather in Jordan is divided into exactly the same seasons as we know them in Europe. It just gets much warmer and drier in summer. In winter, there is actually quite a bit of snow in Amman and the higher plains.

In our opinion, the best times to travel through the Kingdom of Jordan are the spring and autumn months. If you like the warmth, you can of course also travel in summer. Then you just have to get up early and take advantage of the cool morning hours and protect your body from the intense sun.

If you like to be out and about in nature, then we recommend the "green" months in spring for your trip. Especially in Ajloun and Dana it makes a big difference when you travel. After a few heavy rain showers, you will be able to see the nature reserves blooming and lush green in spring. In summer and autumn the area is rather brownish and somewhat desolate. Nevertheless, even then the hikes are easy to carry out and beautiful.

The warmest month in Jordan: July with an average of 31°C. The water temperature in Aqaba reaches 29°C then.

The coldest month in Jordan: January with an average of 5-10°C. The water temperature at the Red Sea drops to 20°C in January/February.

The wettest month in Jordan: December with an average of 60mm of rain.

THE BALTIC STATES

The seasons in the 3 countries are very distinct. The winters are long and cold, the summers short and quite warm.

Winters in the Baltic States are cold, with January and February temperatures mostly below zero. The average temperature in the northernmost capital Tallinn is around -3.5°C, closely followed by Riga with -3°C, Vilnius is actually the coldest capital with -4°C.

The temperatures usually only stabilize in mid-May. The summer months from June to August attract with pleasant, sunny days and temperatures between 22 and 24°C. There are also outliers where the thermometer climbs to 34°C due to southerly winds. However, summer is often rainy. Temperatures remain comfortable in September. October is already getting colder and in November it's really wintry again.

The best travel time largely coincides with the warmest months. Summer is great for everything the countries have to offer. The spring and autumn months are also ideal for weekend trips and people who don't mind cooler temperatures. By the way, there is something about visiting the capitals in the snow.
